Steven Avruch is an experienced general counsel, chief legal officer and C-suite executive, having served most recently as the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of AVROBIO, Inc. from January 2019 until its merger with Tectonic Therapeutic in June 2024.  As Chief Legal Officer, Steve was responsible for the company’s legal affairs, including providing guidance on corporate governance, SEC, financial, strategic transactions (including licensing and M&A), compliance, employment, regulatory, IP and litigation matters.

Prior to joining AVROBIO, Steve provided legal consulting services to a number of public and private companies, including Syntimmune, guiding that company through its acquisition for up to $1.2 billion by Alexion Pharmaceuticals.

Previously, Steve served as Vice President and Chief Corporation Counsel for Biogen, with responsibility for overseeing corporate governance, Board relations, SEC and public company reporting activities.  Prior to that role, Steve served as Associate General Counsel with responsibility for providing legal guidance to Biogen’s global Pharmaceutical Operations & Technology group, including its technical development, manufacturing and quality business units.

Earlier, Steve served as Deputy General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Momenta Pharmaceuticals, advising its board of directors and management on corporate governance, M&A, manufacturing and supply, real estate and other legal matters.  Prior to joining Momenta, Steve served as Deputy Chief Legal Officer and Assistant Secretary of both Polaroid Corporation and Genuity, Inc. (formerly GTE Internetworking and BBN Corporation).

Steve started his career as an associate in the Business Department of Nutter McClennen & Fish in Boston.

Steve has focused on advancing diversity in career, professional and community contexts, previously serving as co-chair of ReachOUT, Biogen’s LGBTQ employee resource network, and as a director of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association.
